The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has initiated a case against Jasim Mohammad, a resident of Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, for operating a ‘study and research center’ focused on Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The center, known as the ‘Centre for Narendra Modi Studies’ or ‘NaMo Kendra,’ was allegedly established in 2021 without the necessary permissions from the central government or the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).
The investigation into Mohammad’s activities began following a complaint lodged by the PMO. The FIR was filed on October 24th, invoking the Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Act.
About ‘NaMo Kendra’
According to its website, ‘NaMo Kendra’ describes itself as an ‘independent global research center’ where leaders, intellectuals, and social reformers convene to address national challenges. The center claims its objectives align with ‘nation-building’ and are often associated with universities and higher education institutions.
Jasim Mohammad is identified on the website as a professor and doctor, serving as the managing trustee and chairman. He stated that the center produces research publications, reports, and policy briefs, emphasizing academic honesty and openness to scrutiny.
Kangana Ranaut’s Involvement
The center’s website also features BJP MP Kangana Ranaut, who has endorsed a book compiled and edited by her, titled ‘Rashtra Pratham: Narendra Modi,’ which contains the Prime Minister’s speeches. Ranaut has suggested that this book should be a part of every child’s education.
Center’s Activities
The ‘NaMo Kendra’ reportedly held an event in Delhi in September 2024 to celebrate PM Modi’s birthday. The conclave, titled ‘How PM Narendra Modi Strengthened India’s Relations with the Global World,’ saw participation from various prominent figures, including RSS-BJP veteran Jagdish Mukhi and professors from Delhi University and Jawaharlal Nehru University, alongside Kangana Ranaut.
The CBI’s case primarily focuses on the alleged misuse of the Prime Minister’s name and related emblems without authorization.
