The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has initiated a case against a man from Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, accused of running a ‘study and research centre’ under the name ‘NaMo Kendra’ since 2021. The investigation began following a complaint from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).
The FIR, filed on October 24, accuses Jasim Mohammad of violating the Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Act by operating the ‘Centre for Narendra Modi Studies’ without necessary permissions. The center’s website makes several claims about its operations, including featuring BJP MP Kangana Ranaut, who has reportedly compiled and edited a volume of PM Modi’s speeches for the center.
What is the ‘NaMo Kendra’?
According to its website, the ‘NaMo Kendra’ describes itself as an “independent global research centre” where prominent individuals convene to discuss national challenges. Located in Aligarh, the center’s stated objectives align with ‘nation-building’ and are often within the scope of higher education institutions.
The CBI’s FIR states that the center was registered in January 2021 under the Indian Trust Act by Jasim Mohammad without prior approval from the central government or the PMO.
Allegations and Connections
Jasim Mohammad, who identifies himself as a professor and doctor, is listed as the managing trustee and chairman of the center. He claims the center produces research publications, reports, and policy briefs that are open to academic scrutiny. The center’s publications include titles related to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s international relations and socio-economic initiatives.
Notably, Kangana Ranaut has endorsed a Hindi book by the center titled ‘Rashtra Pratham: Narendra Modi’, which features the Prime Minister’s speeches. She reportedly stated that the book should be taught to every child.
The case primarily concerns the alleged misuse of the Prime Minister’s name and other official emblems. The center also reportedly organized an event in Delhi in September 2024 to mark PM Modi’s birthday, with Kangana Ranaut among the speakers.
