In a recent address at a book launch in Delhi, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat shared his perspective on the ongoing trade and H-1B work visa tensions between India and the United States. Bhagwat described the current global system, driven by self-interest and a fragmented vision, as a 2000-year-old construct that India must navigate carefully.
He stressed that India cannot afford to ignore these developments and must proactively find solutions. “We must do whatever is necessary to get out of it… We can’t proceed blindly,” Bhagwat stated, as reported by news agency PTI.
The RSS chief advocates for India to draw strength from its traditional ‘sanatana’ philosophy, which prioritizes inclusivity and ensuring no one is left behind. He believes this approach can guide India in charting its unique course, even as other nations remain focused on self-interest.
Bhagwat elaborated on the shifting global landscape, suggesting that as India aims to become a ‘Vishwamitra’ (friend of the world) or ‘Vishwaguru’ (world leader), it must address unfavorable global currents swiftly. He recalled a conversation with an American individual a few years ago who, while discussing India-US partnerships, repeatedly stressed the need to protect American interests. Bhagwat countered by stating that while every nation has its interests, such a one-sided approach leads to continuous conflict.
He metaphorically described the global power dynamic as a food chain, where those at the top consume others, and failure to adapt is akin to a crime. Bhagwat also reflected on India’s past, noting its ability to endure confrontations since 1947 without resorting to war, even extending help to those who previously opposed its policies.
Bhagwat’s remarks come at a time when Prime Minister Narendra Modi is promoting self-reliance and ‘swadeshi.’ The ongoing trade discussions between India and the US have recently resumed.
