A startling incident occurred at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport on Tuesday when a bus parked at Terminal 3 caught fire. The vehicle reportedly belonged to AISATS, a company that handles ground operations at the airport.
Officials confirmed that the bus was empty at the time of the fire, and thankfully, everyone remained safe. The quick response of airport personnel ensured the fire was brought under control swiftly.
The incident happened around 1 PM. Airport sources indicated that the CNG-powered bus, which was parked on the airside of Terminal 3, suddenly erupted in flames. It’s important to note that no passengers had boarded the bus at that moment.
The Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) for IGI Airport, Vichitra Veer, stated that the fire department was alerted around 1:00 PM. Fire tenders, local police, and CISF personnel were immediately dispatched to the scene to manage the situation and contain the fire.
According to the DCP, the bus was not carrying any passengers or luggage, and only the driver was inside. The fire was successfully controlled, and no injuries were reported as a result of the incident.
An official investigation into the exact cause of the fire will be conducted following an inspection of the vehicle.
Video footage circulating online showed the bus engulfed in flames, situated just a short distance from an Air India aircraft. The rapid response from the airport’s fire services meant the fire was extinguished within a mere 2-3 minutes, preventing any potential damage to nearby aircraft or disruption to airport operations.
Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances that led to the fire.
