In a shocking turn of events, Parchh village in Hamirpur district has become the site of a suspected honour killing. A 24-year-old man, Ravi Shriwas, from Banda district, was brutally beaten to death after he went to meet his cousin, with whom he was in a relationship. The family, reportedly opposed to their relationship, allegedly tied him up and inflicted fatal blows.
Tragically, upon hearing of Ravi’s death, the 18-year-old woman he was involved with attempted to end her own life by slitting her throat. She is currently in critical condition.
According to police investigations, Ravi arrived at the village to meet the woman, an affair that had been ongoing and disapproved by both families. The situation escalated when the woman’s uncle, Pintoo, discovered Ravi at the house. An argument ensued, which witnesses claim led to Pintoo attacking Ravi with a knife. Subsequently, Ravi was reportedly restrained with a rope and beaten with sticks by Pintoo and other family members, resulting in his death.
The family initially attempted to mislead authorities by claiming Ravi had consumed poison. However, the severe injuries he sustained raised suspicions among the hospital staff, who then alerted the police.
Ravi’s father has filed a First Information Report (FIR) against five individuals. Police have detained three suspects and increased security in the village to maintain order.
The couple’s relationship was a source of significant tension, particularly after Ravi and the woman had allegedly eloped earlier in the year, only for her to be recovered by the police. Her second marriage was scheduled for November 2, and authorities believe Ravi’s visit was an attempt to convince her to elope again, which may have triggered the violent confrontation.
While the woman’s grandmother alleged that Ravi initiated the physical altercation, the police are continuing their investigation. The woman’s statement will be crucial once she recovers.
