THINK Gas, the company spearheading the city gas project in Thiruvananthapuram, recently convened an important utility coordination meeting at the Institute of Engineers Hall. The primary goal was to raise awareness and address the potential risks to natural gas pipelines, which are frequently susceptible to damage during various excavation activities.
The session saw active participation from key stakeholders, including representatives from the Public Works Department (PWD), Kerala Water Authority (KWA), Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB), Uralungal Labour Contract Cooperative Society (ULCCS), and other utility contractors. A comprehensive presentation was delivered, underscoring the critical importance of the natural gas network, the ongoing progress of pipeline installation in the district, and the stringent safety protocols being implemented.
A core focus of the meeting was the ‘Dial Before You Dig’ initiative. This program strongly encourages all departments and contractors to contact a dedicated helpline (1800 2022 999) prior to commencing any excavation work. This proactive measure is designed to prevent accidental damage to underground pipelines, safeguard the lives of workers and the public, and foster improved cooperation among utility providers.
Cutting-Edge Safety Measures
The company also showcased its advanced safety features, notably the ‘Geofence’ system. This innovative technology establishes a virtual five-meter boundary around pipelines. Utilizing GPS, GIS, SCADA, and VTS technologies, it provides real-time monitoring of excavation activities. Any unauthorized intrusion into this virtual perimeter instantly triggers alerts to control rooms, mobilizing rapid response field teams to the site for immediate action.
Furthermore, officials received detailed briefings on various physical systems in place to protect pipelines. These include clearly visible route markers, pole markers, path markers, protective warning mats, and pipeline chamber markers. Attendees were also educated on essential ‘do’s and don’ts’ before and during excavation, as well as crucial methods for identifying potential gas leakages. The availability of a 24×7 emergency response team, ready to support excavation work and handle incidents, was also emphasized.
According to Deepu John, Deputy Regional Head–Kerala for THINK Gas, the Geofence system exemplifies how technology can significantly bolster safety. He stated that by detecting unauthorized excavation activities in real-time, the company can respond swiftly to prevent damage and protect the entire community.
