In a significant step towards strengthening the region’s aquatic food sector, Minister for Industries and Food Processing, T.G. Bharath, officially opened a new fish value-added processing unit on Saturday. Located near the Nannur toll gate, this facility is a key component of the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), a national scheme designed to develop the fisheries sector.
During the inauguration event, Minister Bharath emphasized the government’s dual objective: to encourage greater fish consumption among the populace and to bolster the fisheries industry through enhanced value-added production and processing. He highlighted that such modern units are crucial for increasing revenue streams for fishermen, while simultaneously educating the public on the nutritional benefits of incorporating more seafood into their daily diets. The Minister reaffirmed the State government’s unwavering commitment to fostering the fisheries industry by actively supporting fish-based enterprises and ensuring a steady supply of healthy, locally sourced food options.
District Collector A. Siri elaborated on the unit’s mission, explaining that it aims to promote the importance of fish and prawn consumption, underscoring their health advantages. She also noted that the new facility will predominantly feature seafood-based dishes, comprising 75% of its offerings, with the remaining 25% dedicated to chicken and mutton options.
The entire project was established at a cost of ₹50 lakh. This investment was made possible through a collaborative funding model, with 60% of the financial assistance provided by the Central and State governments, and the remaining 40% contributed by the beneficiary. Panyam MLA Gauru Charitha Reddy and Fisheries Deputy Director Ranganath Babu were also present to mark this important occasion.
