GUWAHATI: The Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) has officially moved to form the next Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) government following their impressive win. A BPF delegation, led by party president Hagrama Mohilary, met with Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya on Sunday, September 28, 2025, to stake their claim.
During the meeting, Mr. Mohilary extended a personal invitation to the Governor for the swearing-in ceremony scheduled for October 3. He highlighted the significance of the date, noting that October 3 marks the Governor’s birthday. “The Governor’s presence will add value to the event as October 3 is his birthday. If he visits Kokrajhar, the BTC headquarters, we will celebrate his birthday together,” Mr. Mohilary shared after exiting the Raj Bhavan.
The BPF has also invited Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and plans to invite several Cabinet Ministers to the oath-taking event.
Mr. Mohilary expressed appreciation for the “positive statements” made by both the Chief Minister and Pramod Boro, the leader of the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), who resigned as the Chief Executive Member of the BTC on the same day. “We are willing to work in coordination with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the UPPL, and other political parties. Our priority will be to ensure the progress of the BTC and its people,” Mr. Mohilary stated, emphasizing a collaborative approach.
Among the first initiatives for the new BTC government, Mr. Mohilary announced plans for a memorial park and a statue dedicated to the revered cultural icon Zubeen Garg in Kokrajhar.
The BPF’s victory is particularly notable as the party had previously ended its alliance with the BJP before the 2020 BTC elections. They defied expectations, securing 28 out of the 40 seats across the five districts governed by the BTC: Baksa, Chirang, Kokrajhar, Tamulpur, and Udalguri.
In contrast, the UPPL, which previously led the BTC in coalition with the BJP and the regional Gana Suraksha Party, secured only seven seats, while the BJP won five. This combined tally was nearly half of what the two parties achieved five years prior.
Earlier, after submitting his resignation, Mr. Boro thanked the residents of the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) for granting his party the opportunity to govern for five years. “Our focus has always been on peace in the BTC, and it will continue to be so. We are assessing our loss and will take corrective measures,” he commented, confirming his party’s commitment to supporting the new administration.
