In a notable address, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat has advocated for India to forge its own path amidst the current trade and H-1B visa tensions with the United States. Bhagwat suggested that the prevailing global system, driven by a 2000-year-old fragmented vision and self-interest, is becoming increasingly problematic. He asserted that India cannot afford to ignore these global dynamics and must actively seek solutions, stating, “We can’t proceed blindly.”

Speaking at a book launch event in Delhi, Bhagwat highlighted India’s traditional ‘sanatana’ approach, which emphasizes inclusivity and ensuring no one is left behind. He proposed that India could lead the world by charting its own philosophical path, distinct from the self-interest-driven models prevalent elsewhere.
As India aims to become a ‘Vishwamitra’ (friend of the world) or ‘Vishwaguru’ (global teacher), Bhagwat stated, the nation must adapt to global shifts and actively address unfavorable currents, or ‘ulti dhaara,’ without delay.
Recounting a conversation with an American individual a few years ago, Bhagwat noted that while partnerships in security and economy were discussed, the American consistently emphasized protecting U.S. interests. Bhagwat responded by pointing out that all nations have their interests and pursue them, which inevitably leads to conflict. He added that individual interests also play a role, leading to a desire to control everything, illustrating this with the analogy of the food chain, where the strong prey on the weak.
Bhagwat reflected on India’s post-independence history, noting that the nation has successfully navigated numerous confrontations since 1947 without resorting to war, even extending support to those who have opposed its policies.
This perspective aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s emphasis on ‘swadeshi’ and self-reliance. While not directly referencing U.S. tariffs or H-1B visa fees, Bhagwat’s remarks come as trade negotiations between India and the U.S. have resumed, underscoring the importance of an independent and strategic approach for India in international relations.
