The Congress party has ignited a major political firestorm in Bihar, alleging widespread irregularities in the final voter lists. On Saturday, October 4, 2025, the party declared that the number of deleted voter names in some constituencies alarmingly surpasses the victory margins seen in the last assembly election. This revelation casts a shadow of doubt over the fairness of the upcoming polls.
The opposition further escalated its attack, accusing the Election Commission of acting as a “puppet” for the ruling party. They claim that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar was meticulously designed to grant an unfair political advantage to the BJP and its allies.
In a scathing post on X, Congress General Secretary (Communications) Jairam Ramesh launched a fresh broadside against the Election Commission. He urged the body to uphold its impartiality and cease functioning as the “B-team” of the BJP.
Ramesh highlighted concerning reports, including one from Jamui in Bihar, where an astonishing 247 individuals were reportedly registered at a single address. He asserted that such pervasive irregularities in the revised electoral rolls are clear evidence of a flawed SIR exercise.
“The Election Commission has seemingly orchestrated this entire SIR process at the bidding of the BJP. Even their claims of implementing reforms in the final SIR are proving to be baseless,” Ramesh stated in his Hindi post. “Reports from across Bihar unequivocally confirm that the sole objective of this entire exercise is to provide undue political benefits to the BJP and its allied parties.”
Ramesh emphasized that despite the SIR process, numerous discrepancies in the final list demonstrate the Election Commission’s disregard for the clear directives issued by the Supreme Court.
“Operating as the BJP’s B-team, the Election Commission has descended into a state of utter shamelessness,” he declared.
The Congress leader then directly challenged Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar: “Will Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar explain how 247 voters were found residing in a single household? And why does one individual’s name appear three times at the same polling booth? How are such colossal irregularities still present in the final voter list? Or will they, as usual, choose to remain silent?”
Ramesh underscored the gravity of the situation, noting, “What’s truly alarming is that in certain assembly constituencies, the sheer volume of deleted voters actually exceeds the margin by which candidates won in the previous elections.”
He reiterated the Congress’s long-standing position: the Election Commission serves the entire nation and must never appear to be merely a tool of the ruling party.
According to Ramesh, the Election Commission’s current “lax operations and politically biased policies” are severely undermining India’s democratic foundations and damaging its global reputation.
“We urge, once again, that instead of hastily concluding this SIR process – which was seemingly initiated to aid the BJP – the Election Commission must act with complete impartiality,” Ramesh asserted.
The Congress has consistently accused the EC of using the SIR to deliberately remove the names of Congress supporters, even taking the matter to the Supreme Court with other parties to halt the revision exercise.
In response, the Election Commission has maintained its stance, denying all allegations of irregularities and affirming that the SIR is being conducted strictly in adherence to the law and the Constitution.
