The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), a prominent political entity from Uttar Pradesh, has officially kicked off the candidate announcement process for the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections, scheduled for October-November 2025. This move makes them the first party to do so, setting an early pace for the electoral season.
The initial list of candidates covers three out of four constituencies in Kaimur district: Bhabua, Mohania, and Ramgarh.
Back in July 2025, BSP chief and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati had clearly stated the party’s intention to contest all 243 Assembly seats in Bihar independently, signaling a determined solo campaign.
During a recent press conference, Chote Lal Ram, the BSP president for Kaimur district, formally introduced the candidates. He announced Vikas, also known as Lalu Patel, for Bhabua; Om Prakash Diwana for Mohania; and Satish Yadav, or Pintu Yadav, for Ramgarh. Ram also indicated that the candidate for the Chainpur assembly seat would be revealed shortly.
Ram emphasized that these nominations for the 2025 Assembly elections were made under the direct guidance of party national president Mayawati, central in-charge and Rajya Sabha MP Ramji Gautam, and Bihar in-charge Anil Kumar Patel.
A Look Back: BSP’s Previous Performance and a Notable Defection
In the previous Assembly elections, the BSP vied for 78 constituencies but secured only one victory: Chainpur. There, Mohammad Jama Khan emerged victorious against the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) candidate, Brij Kishor Bind, with a substantial margin of 24,294 votes.
Despite this success, Khan later defected to the ruling Janata Dal (United) and was appointed the Minorities Welfare Minister in Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s cabinet.
The Ramgarh constituency witnessed a nail-biting contest where BSP’s Ambika Singh narrowly lost to Rashtriya Janata Dal’s (RJD) Sudhakar Singh by a mere 189 votes. Sudhakar Singh is notably the son of former RJD state president Jagdanand Singh.
Subsequently, Sudhakar Singh was nominated as the RJD candidate for Buxar in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, where he successfully triumphed over BJP’s Mithilesh Tiwari.
When the Ramgarh seat became vacant, a by-election took place in November 2024, with RJD fielding Ajit Singh, Sudhakar’s younger brother.
However, Ajit Singh secured only the third position. The seat was ultimately won by BJP’s Ashok Kumar Singh, who edged out his BSP opponent, Satish Yadav, by a narrow margin of 1,362 votes. Notably, Satish Yadav is set to re-contest from Ramgarh in the upcoming elections.
Looking at the 2020 elections, the BSP finished as the runner-up in two Assembly constituencies and secured third place in fourteen others. The party’s overall vote share in that election stood at 1.5%.
