Biocon Chairperson Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw’s recent remarks on the state of Bengaluru’s infrastructure have stirred a political conversation. She shared on the social platform X that a foreign business visitor to Biocon Park had questioned her about the city’s subpar roads and pervasive garbage problem, even drawing a comparison to China’s efficiency.
In response, Karnataka’s Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, Priyank Kharge, expressed uncertainty about which specific areas of Bengaluru Ms. Mazumdar-Shaw had experienced. He emphasized that development work is actively underway, with the state growing rapidly and addressing infrastructure needs.
Karnataka Minister MB Patil lauded Mazumdar-Shaw as a valuable asset to the state and the nation, acknowledging her significant contribution to Bengaluru’s reputation through Biocon. However, he suggested that making public comments about issues that are already being addressed is “not in good taste.” Patil highlighted that infrastructure issues like potholes, exacerbated by heavy rainfall, are being managed, and substantial funds are allocated to ongoing projects.
This exchange follows remarks made by Karnataka’s Deputy Chief Minister, DK Shivakumar, who recently addressed the city’s persistent garbage problems. He alluded to a “big garbage mafia” hindering progress and also commented on traffic congestion, stating it’s a global challenge. Shivakumar noted that Bengaluru receives more attention for its traffic issues due to the vibrant local media landscape, which is more open to criticism compared to other states.
