In a strong statement against the online glorification of criminals, Siddapura police on Saturday registered a First Information Report (FIR) against eight individuals. These individuals were found to be using social media to praise and uplift anti-social elements, treating them as heroes.
Deputy Commissioner of Police, South Division, Lokesh B Jagalasar, stated that this action is part of a broader effort to counter the growing fascination and follower base these criminal figures are gaining on social media. Police meticulously tracked down the suspects using their Facebook account details and initiated ‘history-sheets’ against them, a formal record of criminal activity.
A police officer revealed that numerous students were identified among the ‘fan pages’ dedicated to these gangs. These students were summoned, questioned, and subsequently released after providing written undertakings promising to cease such activities. The authorities have warned that the initiative to identify and take strict action against those who promote and laud ‘rowdies’ on social media will be rigorously maintained and monitored.
The arrested individuals were specifically found to be actively promoting and praising two prominent local gangs, including those associated with ‘Wilson Garden Nagar’ and ‘rowdy Mahesh Siddapura.’ Their posts were aimed at inciting anger and fostering animosity within the online community.
This police action aligns with a special drive launched by the City Police Commissioner to effectively contain rowdyism and other anti-social activities throughout Bengaluru.
As part of this comprehensive crackdown, the police have significantly increased night patrolling, conducted surprise checks, and set up numerous ‘naka bandi’ (checkpoints) across the city. Jurisdictional police units have been explicitly directed to enforce strict measures against any and all violations.
