A court in Bengaluru has postponed its decision until October 9 regarding a petition filed by actor Darshan, who is currently in Bengaluru prison as an accused in the Renukaswamy murder case. The petition seeks improved facilities for the actor during his incarceration.
During the recent hearing, Darshan’s legal counsel, advocate Sunil, passionately argued for his client to be transferred to a different cell, citing what he described as “excessive restrictions.” Sunil questioned the heightened security measures around Darshan, asking, “Many VIPs have been imprisoned. Were they all given the same kind of security? Why is so much security only for Darshan?” He also pointed out that his client had been held in a quarantine cell for an unusual 45 days, far exceeding the 14-day period typically outlined in jail manuals.
Furthermore, Sunil drew comparisons to other high-profile inmates, stating, “Look at the facilities Umesh Reddy (convicted rapist) was given — luxurious ones. If needed, I can produce documents.”
Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) Prasanna Kumar, opposing the petition, urged the defense counsel to be more precise in his demands. “My dear friend, just tell us what facilities you want. We are already providing what is required. Why all this argument beyond that?” Kumar stated.
The presiding Judge also intervened, prompting Sunil to streamline his arguments. “Ask for what you want. We don’t have time for this; there is other work pending,” the judge remarked.
In response, Mr. Sunil countered the SPP, asserting that the prosecution was “creating a new law that did not exist.” He vehemently denied that the term “quarantine” was present in the jail manual, claiming, “If that word was there, I would have withdrawn the case right away.” The SPP, however, confirmed that “quarantine” indeed appears within the manual.
After hearing comprehensive arguments from both sides, the court decided to reserve its final order until October 9.
