Jagadish Shettar, a prominent BJP Member of Parliament, has formally requested the Union government to initiate the process of transferring civilian zones located within Belagavi’s military cantonment to the administration of the city corporation.
During a recent high-level meeting in New Delhi, the Lok Sabha member presented a detailed memorandum outlining his proposals to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.
Shettar highlighted that this transfer aligns with existing directives from the Defence Ministry and explicit instructions from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which mandate that all civilian areas within military cantonments should be handed over to their respective local urban governance bodies following a joint survey.
Despite numerous meetings involving officials from the Defence sector, the district administration, and the Belagavi city corporation, the crucial land transfer has encountered significant delays.
He provided comprehensive documentation detailing the civilian areas within the Belgaum Cantonment, reiterating his call for their swift transfer to local municipal control.
Shettar further informed that all necessary details have already been furnished to both the Chief Secretary of Karnataka and the Defence Department Secretary in New Delhi, urging Minister Singh to expedite the handover process without further delay.
Beyond the land transfer, the MP also put forward an ambitious proposal to Minister Singh, advocating for the establishment of defense manufacturing industries within Belagavi, aiming to boost local economy and national defense capabilities.
According to a release from Mr. Shettar’s office, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has assured that he will thoroughly review the issues discussed and take prompt and decisive action.
