In a significant plea, Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi has officially urged the State government to grant tax-free status to Roi Roi Binale, the poignant final feature film of the late cultural icon, Zubeen Garg.
Mr. Gogoi emphasized that such a gesture would be a fitting tribute to Garg’s lifelong dedication to enriching Assam’s vibrant cultural heritage. He highlighted that making the film tax-free would ensure this cherished artistic farewell reaches audiences in every corner of the State, as expressed in his letter to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday, October 27, 2025.
Zubeen Garg, the beloved singer-composer, took on the lead role of a blind artist in the film, which was co-produced with his wife, Garima Saikia Garg. Directed by Rajesh Bhuyan, Roi Roi Binale is slated for its grand release on October 31.
The cultural titan tragically passed away on September 19 at the age of 52 while swimming off an island in Singapore.
“Roi Roi Binale represents the final cinematic masterpiece from the revered late Garg. His untimely demise last month plunged the people of Assam into deep sorrow. Even as investigations into the tragic incident continue, citizens across the State are united in honoring his memory and his immense contributions to our culture,” Mr. Gogoi wrote in his letter.
A member of the production team revealed that the film has already broken booking records, propelled by an overwhelming outpouring of love and emotion following Garg’s death. The movie is set to premiere in 46 cities.
“All first-day tickets for the film, which will be screened across 90 cinemas in Assam, have been completely pre-booked. To accommodate this unprecedented demand, cinema halls throughout the State have added early morning shows, with some commencing as early as 6 a.m.,” a source close to the film’s production elaborated.
