SILCHAR: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Friday that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) tasked with investigating the death of singer-actor Zubeen Garg has received the latest autopsy and toxicology reports from Singapore. The SIT is expected to submit its comprehensive report by December 17.
Sarma stated that the SIT’s report will provide a broader perspective on the incident, and the government will share detailed information with the public, expecting many previously unknown facts to come to light. He reaffirmed his stance that Zubeen Garg was murdered, addressing skepticism by emphasizing his role as the state’s home minister.
“Many people, including opposition leaders, asked how I knew. But they should understand, I am the home minister of this state. If a chief minister calls it a murder, there must be something behind it,” Sarma explained.
He further added that the SIT has amassed substantial evidence and assured that justice will be served. “Writing Justice for Zubeen on social media won’t help the investigation. Our team is working hard, the people of Assam should have patience,” he urged.
Zubeen Garg passed away in Singapore on September 19. Initial findings from the Singapore Police suggested the cause of death was drowning. However, the Assam Police initiated a murder investigation and arrested seven individuals, including Zubeen’s cousin, who is a senior Assam Police officer.
Zubeen Garg’s body was returned to Assam on September 21. A post-mortem examination was conducted at Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) before his cremation on September 29. Viscera samples were sent to the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) in New Delhi to check for poison. The family received the CFSL report on October 10, which was subsequently forwarded to GMCH for further analysis, though its contents remain undisclosed due to the ongoing investigation.
Chief Minister Sarma also expressed his disapproval of opposition leaders politicizing the singer’s death. “They are fake Anuragi (admirers) using the tragedy for political mileage. The SIT is working tirelessly to bring out the truth. Those who doubt should wait till December 17, I can guarantee they’ll change their statements,” he asserted.
