A political firestorm has erupted in Assam following Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s explosive claim that State Congress president Gaurav Gogoi is a “Pakistani agent” planted by a foreign power. The Opposition leader quickly retaliated on Saturday, November 1, 2025, asserting that such comments render the Chief Minister “unfit” to govern.
Gogoi specifically lambasted the timing of Sarma’s serious allegations, noting they were made on a day of cultural significance for Assam: the release of the late cultural icon Zubeen Garg’s final film.
Chief Minister Sarma had repeatedly linked Gogoi to Pakistan through his British wife, doubling down on these accusations on Friday and claiming to possess evidence. However, Gogoi vehemently refuted these charges.
“Over the past few months, Himanta Biswa Sarma dangoriya has lost credibility. Yesterday when the entire state was watching Zubeen Garg perform for the last time in Roi Roi Binale, the Chief Minister’s comments showed his growing fear of losing power. It was another example of why he is unfit as the chief minister of the people of Assam.”

Writing on X (formerly Twitter), Gogoi stated, “Over the past few months, Himanta Biswa Sarma dangoriya has lost credibility.” He continued, “Yesterday, when the entire state was watching Zubeen Garg perform for the last time in ‘Roi Roi Binale’, the Chief Minister’s comments showed his growing fear of losing power. It was another example of why he is unfit as the chief minister of the people of Assam,” highlighting his role as the Congress deputy leader in Lok Sabha.
The controversy surrounding Zubeen Garg adds another layer to this political drama. Garg’s tragic death while swimming in Singapore on September 19 prompted widespread public mourning and a Special Investigating Team (SIT) from the state police’s CID to probe the circumstances. His final cinematic offering, ‘Roi Roi Binale’ (meaning ‘Tears still flow’), premiered to full houses across Assam and in various Indian cities on Friday, further amplifying the impact of Sarma’s remarks.
