The mortal remains of Assam’s beloved popular singer, Zubeen Garg, arrived at Kamarkuchi, just outside Guwahati, for his cremation. The ceremony, held with full state honors on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, drew a massive gathering of his grieving family, devoted fans, and esteemed dignitaries.
His body was reverently placed on a specially prepared podium, adjacent to the platform designated for his final rites.
The funeral pyre itself was a sight of solemn beauty, erected on the platform, draped in a white canopy, and adorned with an abundance of fresh flowers.
From the early hours of the morning, priests performed sacred Vedic rituals, their chants filling the air with reverence.
A dedicated team of Assam Police personnel had the somber honor of serving as pallbearers, carefully carrying Zubeen’s casket.
Prior to his body being placed on the pyre for the final rites, Assam Police offered a solemn gun salute, a poignant tribute to the departed artist.
An immense crowd, spilling over onto the surrounding hills, converged at the cremation site. The air was thick with emotional slogans like ‘Long Live Zubeen’ and ‘Jai Zubeen da‘. In a deeply moving moment, many mourners sang ‘Mayabini Ratir buku‘, a song Zubeen Garg himself had often wished would be performed at his funeral.
At the cremation site, members of the Garg family, led by his wife Garima, offered their final, tearful tributes.
Among the many dignitaries present were Union Ministers Sarbananda Sonowal, Kiren Rijiju, and Pabitra Margherita, alongside Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary, and numerous other cabinet ministers and high-ranking government officials, all of whom laid floral wreaths on the singer’s coffin.
In a powerful display of respect, Mr. Sonowal, Mr. Margherita, Chief Minister Sarma, and the Leader of the Opposition, Debabrata Saikia, knelt to offer their personal tributes.
The poignant final journey to the cremation ground had commenced from the Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex in Guwahati, following a second post-mortem examination at Gauhati Medical College Hospital.
