Andhra Pradesh’s Minister for Backward Classes’ Welfare, S. Savitha, made a significant announcement on Wednesday (September 17): the much-anticipated BC Protection Act is nearing its final stages. This crucial legislation, a key election promise, is designed to champion the dignity and self-respect of backward communities. As part of its implementation, the government is also moving forward with plans to secure a 34% reservation for BCs in local body elections, as stated in a recent press release.
The progress follows a pivotal meeting held the same day at the Secretariat in Amaravati. Minister Savitha presided over the gathering, which saw the presence of several key figures, including other BC Ministers, Home Minister Anita, and Law Minister N. Md. Farooq.
Speaking to reporters, Ms. Savitha emphasized the TDP-led government’s unwavering commitment to advancing the welfare of Backward Classes since its inception. She highlighted Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu’s vision, inspired by the late N.T. Rama Rao, to ensure that BCs achieve prominence and equality across all societal sectors.
Further underscoring this commitment, Minister Savitha revealed an unprecedented allocation of over ₹47,000 crore in the 2025-26 budget specifically for BC welfare – the largest in the state’s history. She reiterated that the BC Protection Act is being meticulously crafted to honor election pledges, and concrete steps are being taken to institutionalize the 34% reservation for BCs in local body elections. ‘Our coalition government’s primary objective,’ she affirmed, ‘is to empower Backward Classes to lead lives filled with dignity and self-respect.’
Adding to the discourse, Minister Kollu Ravindra voiced strong criticism against the previous administration, alleging that BC leaders endured significant challenges, including the burden of false cases and unjust imprisonment. He passionately asserted that the new BC Protection Act stands as a beacon of hope, promising a life of respect and fairness for the community. Other notable ministers present at the meeting included Atchannaidu, Anagani Satya Prasad, Kondapalli Srinivas, and Vasamsetti Subhash.
