Andhra Pradesh’s Minister for Water Resources, Nimmala Rama Naidu, announced on Sunday, October 12, 2025, that a substantial budget of approximately ₹840 crore is essential to repair 800 of the 1,040 existing Lift Irrigation Schemes (LIS) throughout the state. This critical investment aims to address the widespread disrepair affecting a large portion of the state’s irrigation infrastructure.
The Minister made this announcement during the foundation stone laying ceremony for a new Lift Irrigation Scheme in Maamidada village, located within the Jaggampeta Assembly Constituency. This particular scheme, named in honor of Jyothula Papa Rao, is slated for construction at an estimated cost of ₹3.49 crore. It forms a vital component of the Purushottapatnam Lift Irrigation Project State-II and is projected to provide irrigation to over 3,500 acres in the region, bringing much-needed water to local farmers.
During his address to the assembled farmers, Mr. Rama Naidu criticized the previous government, asserting that they had neglected the vital maintenance of these irrigation schemes across the state. He assured the community that the current State government is fully committed to the task, stating, “The State government is gearing up to repair all 840 Lift Irrigation Schemes, ensuring their proper maintenance for the next decade.” This long-term commitment aims to secure water resources for agricultural needs.
Jaggampeta MLA Jyothula Nehru expressed his gratitude to Minister Rama Naidu for approving the new LIS. Key officials from the Water Resources Department, including Chief Engineer K. Narasimha Murthy and Kakinada District Superintendent Engineer D. Esubabu, were also present at the event, underscoring the collaborative effort behind this crucial development project.
