Distressing visuals have emerged from the Venkateswara Swamy temple in Srikakulam, Andhra Pradesh, following a stampede that claimed at least 10 lives and left many injured. The incident occurred on Saturday as a large crowd gathered for the Ekadashi festival.
The chaotic scenes, captured on camera, show devotees trapped in a narrow passage, desperately trying to escape. Many women, carrying puja items, were seen screaming for help amidst the pandemonium. The footage also depicts injured individuals being rushed to nearby hospitals for urgent medical attention.
Following the tragedy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his deep sorrow, offering condolences to the families of the deceased and praying for the swift recovery of the injured. He announced an ex-gratia payment of ₹2 lakh for the next of kin of those who lost their lives and ₹50,000 for the injured.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu also extended his sympathies, stating, “The death of devotees in this tragic incident is extremely heartbreaking. I have instructed officials to provide speedy and proper treatment to those who have been injured.”
Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Andhra Minister Nara Lokesh have also shared their condolences and assured that the government is providing necessary medical care and assistance to those affected by the unfortunate event.
