Andhra Pradesh is currently facing the impact of Cyclone Montha, which has brought relentless heavy rains over the past few days. This surge in rainfall has dramatically increased water levels in the region’s key reservoirs. Specifically, the Pulichintala Reservoir in Palnadu district, situated on the mighty Krishna River, has seen its inflow swell to an alarming five lakh cusecs.
As a result, authorities were compelled to release water downstream on Thursday afternoon (October 30, 2025) as a crucial precautionary measure. This decision subsequently led to the Prakasam Barrage in Vijayawada also discharging its excess floodwaters into the lower riverine areas. The Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) has issued a stern warning, urging residents of low-lying and island villages, often referred to as ‘Lanka areas,’ along the Krishna River to maintain extreme vigilance.
At present, both the inflow and outflow at the Prakasam Barrage are hovering around 2.74 lakh cusecs. Officials anticipate that the first flood warning could be issued by Thursday evening if these discharge rates continue to climb. Experts predict the flood flow might reach up to five lakh cusecs before the levels gradually begin to recede.
Prakhar Jain, the Managing Director of APSDMA, has strongly advised those residing in flood-prone zones to exercise utmost caution. He urged them to avoid venturing into the river, strictly refrain from swimming or fishing, and diligently adhere to all safety instructions provided by local authorities. Public cooperation is essential to ensure everyone’s safety during this critical period.
