Andhra Pradesh CPI State Secretary, K. Ramakrishna, has passionately advocated for an immediate caste census across the state. He argues this crucial enumeration is essential for understanding the demographic and socio-economic realities of backward classes, paving the way for targeted development initiatives.
Speaking at a recent gathering organized by the CPI to rally support for the caste census, Mr. Ramakrishna emphasized the urgent need to pressure the government on this issue. “Should our demands remain unaddressed, we must be prepared to launch a ‘Chalo Amaravati’ rally to make our voices heard,” he declared, highlighting the seriousness of their stance.
Ramakrishna pointed out that states like Telangana and Karnataka have already undertaken similar caste surveys, and even prominent leaders like Rahul Gandhi from the Congress party recognize the significance of such data. He believes that a caste census will provide an accurate snapshot of the population distribution and social standing of various backward castes, enabling policymakers to craft effective strategies for their upliftment and progress.
He further elaborated on the existing disparity, noting that among the 143 backward class communities, only a select few have managed to achieve political representation, with individuals becoming MLAs and MPs. The vast majority, he lamented, continue to lag behind. While acknowledging the long-term goal of a caste-less society, Mr. Ramakrishna stressed that true equality can only be realized through the balanced development of all castes, starting with a clear understanding of their current status.
