Andhra Pradesh Braces for Torrential Rains: Six Districts Under Red Alert

October 22, 2025

Reading Time: 3 min

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Amaravati, Andhra Pradesh, has issued a red alert for the districts of SPSR Nellore, Prakasam, YSR Kadapa, Annamayya, Tirupati, and Chittoor. These regions are bracing for extremely heavy rainfall, potentially exceeding 204.5 mm, on October 22, 2025.

Additionally, an orange alert has been issued for Kurnool, Nandyal, Anantapur, Sri Sathya Sai, and Bapatla districts for October 22, 2025. This warning comes as two significant weather systems are developing: one depression over the southeast Arabian Sea and another expected to form over the Bay of Bengal.

According to the IMD bulletin, a well-marked low-pressure area over the southeast Arabian Sea intensified into a depression by 5:30 a.m. on October 22, 2025. This system is expected to move slowly north-northwestwards over the next 24 hours.

Meanwhile, another well-marked low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal has moved northwestwards, positioning itself over the southwest Bay of Bengal by 5:30 a.m. on October 22, 2025. There is a strong possibility that this system will further intensify into a depression over the southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal, specifically off the north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh coasts, within the next 12 hours. Following this, it is likely to track across the north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and south Andhra Pradesh coasts during the subsequent 12 hours.

Under the influence of these two converging weather systems, strong winds, widespread thunderstorms, and lightning are also anticipated across the Rayalaseema and South Coastal Andhra Pradesh regions.

Between 8:30 a.m. and 10 a.m. on October 22, 2025, many areas in South Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema had already experienced moderate to heavy rainfall, as reported by the State Government’s Directorate of Economics and Statistics (DES).

Key rainfall figures include: Marripadu in SPSR Nellore district recorded 80.75 mm, Peddavaduguru in Anantapur district received 66 mm, Mogilicharla in SPSR Nellore district saw 65 mm, Ongole in Prakasam district registered 36.25 mm, and Allagadda in Nandyal district experienced 29.5 mm of rain.
