Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) leader Anbumani Ramadoss made a strong appeal on Monday, October 27, 2025, to the Tamil Nadu government. He called for an immediate all-party meeting to deliberate on and finalize the reconstitution of the state’s Backward Classes Commission, highlighting that its current term concludes on November 16.
In an official statement, Ramadoss voiced deep apprehension regarding the commission’s performance over the last three years. He accused the existing body, established in November 2022, of failing to uphold its core duties. “This commission, originally tasked with safeguarding social justice, has regrettably become an instrument for government agendas that undermine these very principles. Its inability to accomplish even a single assigned responsibility demonstrates not only profound incompetence but also a grave betrayal of public trust. It is imperative that individuals who harbor views contrary to the principles of social justice are excluded from any position within the newly formed commission,” he asserted.
Ramadoss further elaborated that the commission was initially given six primary responsibilities, along with an additional task. However, he claimed that none of these mandates were fulfilled during its three-year tenure. “A crucial duty of the commission was to undertake a comprehensive review and revision of the lists for Backward Classes and Most Backward Classes. Yet, apart from a minor reclassification of a single caste group into two sub-groups, the commission has done nothing substantial in this area. Furthermore, it completely ignored another vital responsibility: recommending an increase in reservation quotas for religious minority communities, based on their documented social and educational disadvantages,” he alleged.
The PMK leader also pointed out that despite a Supreme Court ruling permitting the collection of data on the social and educational status of the Vanniyar community and advocating for internal reservation, the commission failed to take any decisive action on this front.
