Anant Kumar Singh, a familiar face in Bihar politics and often referred to as ‘Chhote Sarkar’, has officially submitted his nomination papers as a candidate for the JD(U) party in the Mokama assembly constituency. According to the affidavit he filed, Singh’s declared movable and immovable assets are valued at an impressive ₹37.88 crore.
Singh submitted his nomination documents to the Election Commission on Tuesday, prior to the JD(U)’s official announcement of its candidate list for the upcoming assembly elections. Sources within the party indicate that he received the party symbol from senior leadership before filing his papers.
His wife, Neelam Devi, who previously secured the Mokama seat in the 2020 elections on an RJD ticket, has since realigned her support with the current NDA government in Bihar. Her own declared assets, encompassing both movable and immovable properties, stand at ₹62.72 crore.
The Mokama constituency is scheduled to vote in the first phase of the elections on November 6.
Delving deeper into the financial disclosures, Singh’s affidavit reveals that his movable assets amount to ₹26.66 crore, with immovable properties valued at ₹11.22 crore. His wife, Neelam Devi, has declared movable assets totaling ₹13.07 crore and immovable properties worth ₹49.65 crore.
In terms of liquid assets, Singh reported having ₹15.61 lakh in cash, while his wife holds ₹34.60 lakh in cash. Singh also possesses several bank accounts and gold jewelry valued at ₹15 lakh. Neelam Devi’s assets include multiple bank accounts and gold jewelry worth ₹76.61 lakh.
Further details from the affidavit show that Singh’s movable assets include three luxury SUV vehicles valued at ₹3.23 crore. His wife also owns three luxury cars, estimated at ₹77.62 lakh. Additionally, Singh’s declared assets include horses and cows.
The affidavit also highlights that Singh is currently facing 28 criminal cases.
Historically, Singh’s family has maintained a strong electoral record in Mokama, winning the seat consistently since 1990, with a brief exception when a rival figure held the constituency. Singh had transferred the electoral responsibility to his wife Neelam in 2022 after his disqualification from the assembly due to a conviction in a UAPA case. He has since been acquitted by the Patna High Court.
With Singh now stepping back into the electoral arena, he has indicated that he will personally manage the family’s political stronghold, no longer entrusting the responsibility solely to his wife. The RJD has expressed its intention to challenge Singh, popularly known as ‘Chhote Sarkar’ in Mokama, by supporting any candidate who can pose a significant challenge.
