The Government Medical College Hospital in Kozhikode is currently managing a growing number of cases involving amoebic meningoencephalitis, with the total count reaching ten after a 13-year-old boy from Malappuram was recently diagnosed.
Hospital sources confirm that six adult patients are receiving care in the main hospital block, while four children are being treated at the Institute of Maternal and Child Health wing.
In a related development, health department officials have launched an investigation into the source of infection for a 59-year-old Thrissur resident, Raheem, who tragically passed away on September 19 while undergoing treatment. Raheem had been employed at a hotel in Panniyankara, Kozhikode. The Kozhikode Corporation has ordered the temporary closure of the hotel pending further investigation. Authorities have collected water samples from both the hotel and Raheem’s residence for laboratory analysis. Additionally, residents in the vicinity and individuals connected to the hotel have been advised to seek medical attention if they experience any related symptoms.
