Andhra Pradesh is set to get a magnificent new State Central Library in Amaravati, with Education, IT, and Electronics Minister Nara Lokesh announcing its completion within 24 months. This ambitious project, valued at ₹150 crore, aims to establish a world-class facility built to international standards.
During an Assembly session, in response to queries from MLAs Mandali Buddha Prasad, Palle Sindhura Reddy, and Ganababu regarding library development and pending cess collections, Mr. Lokesh outlined ongoing initiatives to enhance library infrastructure and ensure the preservation of valuable manuscripts. He highlighted a significant ₹100-crore donation from Sobha Developers, emphasizing that such generous donor support would be crucial for modernizing these vital public spaces.
Further elaborating on the state’s plans, the Minister revealed that a ₹20-crore model library is under construction in Visakhapatnam, and another in the Mangalagiri constituency is nearing completion, with an inauguration scheduled for October. Looking ahead, the government aims to establish model libraries in all 175 Assembly constituencies and introduce new district libraries in all 26 districts, a considerable expansion from the current 13 functional district libraries.
Addressing concerns about library cess collections, Mr. Lokesh reported a recovery rate of merely 40% in 2022–23, rising slightly to 45% in 2023–24, and reaching 52% in the current fiscal year. To enhance these crucial collections, the government is actively collaborating with the Panchayat Raj and Municipal Administration departments.
To foster a love for reading among children, the Minister detailed plans for new community engagement programs and the introduction of digital libraries. A dedicated mobile application for library services is also on track for launch within the next 100 days. Additionally, libraries will be equipped with a comprehensive selection of books catering to competitive examinations, supporting students in their academic pursuits.
Minister Lokesh concluded by assuring the Assembly that, leveraging valuable suggestions from its members and continued donor support, Andhra Pradesh is committed to developing a library system that will serve as an exemplary model for the entire nation.
