An ambitious new chapter has begun for Alappuzha, often hailed as the ‘Venice of the East,’ with the launch of the first phase of the “Alappuzha – A Global Water Wonderland” project. This grand initiative, part of the Swadesh Darshan 2.0 scheme, is set to transform Alappuzha’s stunning beaches, picturesque canals, and serene backwaters into a world-class tourist destination. The comprehensive project is backed by a substantial investment of ₹93.17 crore.
Initial groundwork is already underway, focusing on vital improvements. The banks of the Vellappally–Shavakkotta canal are being strengthened, and the canal itself is undergoing a deepening process. On the beach front, all survey procedures have been successfully completed, paving the way for piling work to commence shortly. Furthermore, at the iconic Punnamada Finishing Point, crucial load testing for new constructions and preliminary piling preparations are in progress, signaling a rapid pace of development.
The Kerala Tourism Infrastructure Limited has been entrusted by the State government to oversee and execute this transformative project.
Enhancing the Waterfront Experience
A significant portion of the budget, ₹24.25 crore, is dedicated to beachfront development. This ecologically conscious upgrade will introduce modern amenities while preserving the natural beauty of the area. Plans include new promenade walkways, ample parking facilities, comfortable seating areas, enhanced lighting, lush landscaping, and versatile spaces for events. Visitors will also benefit from a new Indian Coast Guard station, outdoor sports courts, and improved waste management systems, ensuring a clean and enjoyable environment.
Revitalizing Historic Canals
The project allocates ₹37 crore for the rejuvenation of Alappuzha town’s historic canals. The goal is to restore these waterways and transform them into vibrant public spaces, celebrating their rich ecological and cultural heritage. Proposed developments feature inviting walkways, comfortable seating, strategic lighting, lively plazas, convenient boat docks, charming cafes, and upgraded boat jetty facilities.
A New International Gateway
At the Punnamada Finishing Point, an international cruise terminal is envisioned, with an investment of ₹8.5 crore. This state-of-the-art facility will include spacious parking, a modern marina, an engaging experience center, helpful information kiosks, a thrilling water adventure zone, a restaurant, and well-maintained public restrooms, all designed to welcome global travelers.
Sustainable Tourism and Community Focus
An additional ₹4 crore has been designated for “soft intervention,” focusing on the holistic development of the region. This includes initiatives for cultural and heritage integration, active community engagement, promotion of environmental sustainability, implementation of digital and smart tourism solutions, targeted training programs, and improved first aid and waste management systems.
This ambitious project is on track for completion, with an expected timeline of February 2026.
