In a landmark move, Telangana Minister Adluri Laxman Kumar formally presented appointment letters to 20 transgender individuals who have joined Hyderabad Metro Rail Ltd (HMRL) as security guards. Out of approximately 400 applicants, these 20 candidates successfully secured these positions.
During the ceremony in Hyderabad on Tuesday (September 16, 2025), the Minister, who oversees SC, ST, Minorities, Disabled, and Transgender Welfare, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting the future aspirations of transgender citizens. He emphasized that the dedication and success of these new recruits would inspire and pave the way for further opportunities within the community, urging them to demonstrate their capabilities to society.
Ms. Anita Ramachandran, Secretary for Women and Child Welfare & SC Development, highlighted additional support systems put in place for the transgender community. These include specialized counseling services in hospitals, ‘Maitri’ clinics dedicated to mental health, provision of identity cards, various skill development initiatives, and financial aid accessible without traditional banking requirements.
Ms. Ramachandran also noted the growing interest from global corporations like Google and Microsoft in offering opportunities to transgender individuals. She expressed optimism that this recruitment drive would inspire similar initiatives across both private and public sectors. She also reminded attendees that the State government had previously assisted community members in securing roles as traffic assistants within the Police department.
