In a heartwarming display of community spirit and a significant step towards greater inclusion, the Rotary Club has generously provided a tandem bicycle to Sharath, a dedicated visually impaired employee at a public sector bank. This thoughtful gift is part of the Rotary’s pioneering EKYA Programme, which champions diversity, equality, and social integration.
The collective effort of the Rotary Club of Bangalore Northwest, the Rotary Club of Bangalore Oasis, the Rotary Club of Turvekere, and several individual benefactors has made it possible for Mr. Sharath to undertake an extraordinary cycling expedition. He will embark on a journey from Bengaluru to Goa, where he is set to participate in the prestigious International Purple Festival, taking place from October 9 to 12.
Ms. Lakshmi Achuta, President of the Rotary Club of Bangalore Northwest, emphasized the profound impact of this initiative. “Our goal with this project is to empower visually impaired individuals by significantly boosting their mobility, fostering greater independence, and ensuring their full social inclusion,” she stated.
Overwhelmed with gratitude, Mr. Sharath shared his appreciation, highlighting how inclusive programs from organizations like the Rotary are vital for raising awareness and instigating positive social transformation. He believes these efforts not only provide opportunities but also shift societal perceptions.
This remarkable cycling endeavor is a collaborative venture with Inclusive Strides, an inspiring group composed of visually impaired individuals and their passionate volunteers, all dedicated to enhancing outdoor accessibility for everyone. The ambitious cycling journey will feature two visually challenged participants, expertly guided by four able-bodied captains, all riding tandem cycles in a powerful symbol of unity and shared adventure.
The International Purple Festival in Goa is a landmark event, proudly hosted by the Department for Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, with steadfast support from the Union government and United Nations India. This festival serves as a vibrant platform to celebrate and advance the critical principles of inclusion, accessibility, and empowerment for people with disabilities on a global scale.
