Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced today that the Indian central government has officially initiated the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) with Singapore. This crucial step seeks Singapore’s full cooperation in the ongoing investigation into the untimely demise of beloved singer Zubeen Garg, who tragically passed away in the Southeast Asian nation.
Just yesterday, the Assam Government sent a formal request to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), emphasizing the need to activate this treaty. Their goal is to ensure a thorough probe into the circumstances surrounding the singer’s death.
Confirming the action, the Chief Minister shared on X (formerly Twitter): “The Ministry of Home Affairs has now formally invoked the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) in connection with the FIR lodged by Assam Police regarding the unfortunate demise of our beloved Zubeen.”
Earlier, Mr. Sarma had highlighted the significance of the MLAT, explaining that its activation would guarantee complete cooperation from Singaporean authorities. This includes providing access to vital case details and offering assistance to potentially extradite any accused individuals to ensure justice is served.
In parallel, the Assam Government has established a 10-member Special Investigation Team (SIT), spearheaded by Special DGP M.P. Gupta. This team is dedicated to meticulously investigating the singer’s death, which occurred in Singapore on September 19 due to drowning in the sea.
Chief Minister Sarma also confirmed that two Assam Police officers are currently in Singapore, actively working with local authorities to gather necessary assistance and information.
