The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has initiated a thorough inquiry into the devastating deaths of two sanitation workers in Tiruchi. The Commission has formally issued notices to both the Tiruchi Corporation Commissioner and the Superintendent of Police, requesting a detailed report on the incident.
The tragic event, which occurred on September 22, saw two sanitation workers succumb to asphyxiation. They were reportedly engaged in work on a newly constructed underground drainage pipeline in the Muthunagar area of Tiruverumbur, within the Tiruchi district, when the unfortunate incident took place.
According to an official release, the NHRC took suo motu cognizance of a media report detailing the incident, expressing grave concern that the circumstances, if accurate, represent a serious violation of human rights. The Commission has set a two-week deadline for the submission of a comprehensive report. This report is expected to cover the progress of the ongoing investigation and specify any compensation that has been or will be provided to the families of the deceased workers.
