In a significant ruling, the First Additional Sessions District Court in Kozhikode has sentenced Roopesh, a resident of Karikkamkulam, to life imprisonment for a murder committed in August 2021.
The tragic incident unfolded on August 20, 2021, when Roopesh launched an attack on Sahir Ali, aiming to disrupt his fish vending business at Kanhiramukku, near Karikkamkulam. During the confrontation, Rajeevan bravely intervened to protect Ali. In the ensuing struggle, both Rajeevan and Ali sustained injuries. Sadly, Rajeevan’s injuries proved fatal, and he later passed away at the Kozhikode Government Medical College Hospital.
During the exhaustive trial, the prosecution, led by public prosecutors Shamsudhin N. and Rashmi Ram, presented a compelling case. They meticulously built their argument with testimony from 43 witnesses, alongside 47 documents and 10 crucial pieces of evidence. This extensive presentation ultimately convinced District Judge N.R. Krishnakumar, who delivered the verdict.
Beyond the life sentence for murder, Roopesh was also ordered to pay a fine of ₹1 lakh. Furthermore, he received an additional seven-year imprisonment sentence and a ₹50,000 fine for the attempted murder of Sahir Ali. As part of the judgment, Roopesh has been mandated to pay ₹1 lakh in victim compensation to Rajeevan’s family and ₹25,000 to Sahir Ali. The Chevayur police conducted the investigation that brought this case to justice.
