Just days following the horrific stampede at actor-politician Vijay’s rally in Karur, which tragically resulted in 41 fatalities, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin made a significant announcement on Monday (September 29, 2025). He stated that the government would soon formulate comprehensive rules and guidelines for all public events organized by political parties and other groups.
The Chief Minister clarified that these new regulations would be drafted after the Justice Aruna Jagadeesan Commission of Inquiry submits its official report. Following this, extensive consultations will take place with all political parties and relevant organizations to ensure effective and widely accepted guidelines.
In a recorded video shared on his social media, Mr. Stalin emphasized the shared responsibility: “It is our collective duty to establish clear rules and guidelines for public events organized by political parties and other organizations. I assure you that these frameworks will be developed once the Inquiry Commission’s report is received and after thorough consultations with all stakeholders. I trust that everyone will cooperate fully with this important initiative.”
He further reiterated, “The government’s future actions will be entirely guided by the recommendations presented in the Commission’s report.”
Addressing Social Media Speculation
Addressing the unverified claims and rampant speculation spreading across social media platforms concerning the Karur tragedy, Mr. Stalin urged the public to act responsibly. He implored citizens to exercise restraint and avoid posting irresponsible or malicious comments. “I have observed the rumors and fake news being disseminated by some individuals on social media,” he stated. “No political leader would ever desire the loss of life, whether it be party members or innocent citizens. Regardless of their political affiliation, all those who perished are fellow Tamils. Therefore, I appeal to everyone to refrain from making irresponsible and malicious remarks.”
Emphasizing the supreme value of human life, Mr. Stalin, who also serves as the DMK president, called for unity. “Let us put aside our political differences, varied ideologies, and personal animosities,” he urged. “My appeal to everyone is to prioritize the welfare of our people. Tamil Nadu has consistently led the nation in many areas. It is our shared duty to ensure such heartbreaking incidents never happen again.”
The Chief Minister confirmed the tragic toll: “We have lost 41 precious lives, including women and children. A solatium of ₹10 lakh has been announced and is currently being disbursed to the affected families. Additionally, we are ensuring comprehensive medical care for all those who were injured in this incident.”
Mr. Stalin described the Karur stampede as a “major tragedy,” an “unprecedented tragedy,” and stressed that it “must never happen again.” He spoke of his profound personal impact from visiting the Karur hospital, stating that the incident continued to weigh heavily on his heart. Despite having already issued immediate directives to the district administration, the Chief Minister felt compelled to travel to Karur himself, unable to stay away.
