A serious allegation of identity fraud during elections has prompted Jharkhand’s Chief Electoral Officer, K Ravikumar, to initiate a thorough investigation. The case involves JMM MLA Dashrath Gagrai, who stands accused of using a fake identity to contest the polls. The matter has been referred to the Seraikela-Kharsawan Deputy Commissioner for further inquiry.
The controversy began with a formal complaint filed by Lalji Ram Tiu, an individual who has openly challenged Mr. Gagrai’s identity. Mr. Gagrai, a prominent three-term MLA representing Kharsawan, has categorically refuted these allegations, suggesting that the complainant frequently targets public figures with such claims.
CEO K Ravikumar confirmed that the complaint, bolstered by an affidavit from the complainant, has been sent to Deputy Commissioner Nitish Kumar Singh for investigation. Ravikumar further clarified the procedural aspects of such disputes, noting that post-election controversies concerning MLAs fall under the purview of the respective state governor, while those involving Members of Parliament are handled by the President.
According to reports, the initial complaint, questioning the MLA’s true identity, was lodged on July 28. Lalji Ram Tiu, who identifies himself as an ex-serviceman, dramatically claims that the individual serving as MLA under the name Dashrath Gagrai is, in reality, Ramkrishna Gagrai, the actual Dashrath Gagrai’s elder brother.
These assertions gained significant legal weight when the complainant submitted a signed affidavit on September 18, reaffirming his claims and citing personal knowledge, various documents, and official records to support his inquiry.
When approached for comment, MLA Dashrath Gagrai strongly dismissed all accusations as entirely unfounded. He stated, “I have submitted affidavits and numerous documents, all of which have undergone rigorous scrutiny during my three successful terms in the assembly elections. The charges are absolutely baseless.” He went on to criticize the complainant, alleging, “In fact, the complainant, who is currently out on bail for allegedly raping a minor, is known for making such groundless allegations against individuals in positions of power.”
