The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) recently received a prestigious honor, bagging the Indian Concrete Institute (ICI) UltraTech Award for its groundbreaking Thin White Topping (TWT) road design. This innovative solution was successfully implemented in the bustling Koramangala area of Bengaluru, showcasing a leap forward in urban infrastructure.
This significant accolade highlights the GBA’s exceptional work on Koramangala’s 1st Cross Empire Road and 7th Cross Road. In 2023, a remarkable 125 mm-thick white topping was meticulously laid across 1.1 kilometers, stretching from Empire Road to Ganapathi Temple, and an additional 1.17 kilometers from the BDA Complex to Wipro Park Signal. This project serves as a testament to the Authority’s commitment to modern and efficient urban planning.
What makes this achievement truly remarkable is the GBA engineering team’s innovative approach. Instead of the standard 180mm design, they developed a thinner, 125mm white topping that proved to be both highly cost-effective and technically robust. This ingenious design isn’t just about saving money; it’s a strategic solution to perennial civic problems, including improving road elevation, ensuring better access for businesses and homes, and enhancing stormwater drainage – all while keeping project expenses significantly lower.
The successful execution of this pivotal project was a collaborative effort, spearheaded by a dedicated team of experts. Chief Engineer M. Lokesh, Superintendent Engineer Hemalatha K., Executive Engineer Satyanarayana Raju E., and Assistant Executive Engineer Veena C. played instrumental roles, demonstrating exemplary leadership and technical prowess throughout the initiative.
