The Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) has sounded urgent flood alarms across the state this Sunday, as both the Krishna and Godavari rivers are experiencing significant rises, threatening low-lying communities.
Specifically, the Godavari River at Bhadrachalam has hit a water level of 42.4 feet, and the Dowleswaram Barrage is currently managing an impressive 10.88 lakh cusecs of inflow and outflow. The first flood warning for this region remains active, prompting authorities to strongly advise those living near the river to stay highly alert. Furthermore, residents are cautioned against trying to cross any overflowing streams, canals, or roads, as these conditions can be extremely dangerous.
Concurrently, the Krishna River at Prakasam Barrage has now escalated to a second flood warning level. Inflows and outflows at this barrage are currently measured at 6.02 lakh cusecs, with projections indicating a further increase to 6.5 lakh cusecs. The barrage is releasing 6,22,395 cusecs, and the water level stands at 15.5 feet. For devotees planning to visit Vijayawada for the ongoing Dasara festivities, particular care is advised during ritual baths in the river.
Prakhar Jain, the Managing Director of APSDMA, reiterated the critical importance for residents in low-lying and riverside communities to implement all necessary precautions, maintain a high level of alertness, and diligently follow official advisories. In case of any emergency, citizens are encouraged to reach out to the control room using the toll-free numbers: 112, 1070, or 18004250101.
Monitoring of the situation remains intense, as continuous inflows from upstream states are contributing to the escalating water levels. The possibility of further flood intensification cannot be discounted, and preparedness remains key.
