Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced on Sunday, September 28, 2025, that a thorough report from the Justice Arun Jagadeesan Commission of Inquiry would shed light on the tragic circumstances that led to the deaths of 39 individuals at a political rally featuring actor and TVK leader Vijay in Karur.
After a somber visit to the Government Medical College Hospital in Karur, where he met those injured, Chief Minister Stalin addressed reporters. Having traveled by air from Chennai to Tiruchi and then by road, he confirmed his directive to establish the Inquiry Commission, helmed by retired High Court judge Aruna Jagadeesan, to meticulously investigate the incident.
When pressed on whether actor Vijay would face arrest regarding the tragedy, Mr. Stalin stated that any such action would be contingent upon the commission’s findings.
Acknowledging concerns about the time an inquiry commission might take, the Chief Minister assured that the commission has been instructed to expedite its findings.
Mr. Stalin declined to comment on whether the choice of a relatively small road for the rally contributed to the high death toll.
The Chief Minister conveyed his profound shock and sorrow over the loss of 39 lives at the political gathering. He emphasized the unprecedented nature of such an incident in political events and vowed to prevent any recurrence. Upon receiving news of the unfolding situation, he immediately dispatched ministers from nearby regions to the Karur Medical College Hospital to provide immediate assistance to the victims.
Earlier, Mr. Stalin paid his respects by laying wreaths on the bodies of the deceased. He also convened a meeting with health, police, revenue, and other relevant officials to review the care being provided to the injured.
