Hyderabad’s exquisite pearls, cherished for centuries for their radiant brilliance and remarkable craftsmanship, are now seeking the distinguished Geographical Indication (GI) tag. This significant endeavor follows closely on the heels of the city’s famous lac bangles, which recently achieved the same prestigious recognition.
Globally acclaimed for their unique luster, superior quality, and intricate artistry, Hyderabad Pearls are an integral part of the city’s identity as the ‘Pearl City of India.’ Obtaining the GI tag is poised to do much more than just safeguard this centuries-old tradition; it will also grant international recognition to Hyderabad’s rich jewelry heritage and significantly boost the visibility and livelihoods of its talented local artisans.
The application process for the Hyderabad Pearls GI tag is being expertly managed by Resolute4IP, working hand-in-hand with Mandadi Sreeha Reddy, who serves as the Nodal Officer for the Toys Industry, GI, and VVMP under the Government of Telangana. Further bolstering this initiative are the dedicated efforts of the Hyderabad-Secunderabad Pearls and Jewellery Merchants Association and the Telugu Pearl Merchant Association, both providing crucial support.
Subhajit Saha, the head of Legal and IPR at Resolute Group of Companies and founder of Resolute4IP, expressed his enthusiasm for the initiative. He remarked, ‘Following the successful GI tagging of Narayanpet Sarees and lac bangles, it is truly appropriate that Hyderabad Pearls also receive this important distinction. This recognition will not only protect our cherished pearl tradition but also unlock fresh economic avenues for pearl artisans and traders, thereby solidifying Hyderabad’s esteemed reputation as the ‘Pearl City’ on the global stage.’
