In a somber development, Karur Town police on Saturday, September 27, 2025, confirmed the registration of a case against V.P. Mathiyazhagan, the Karur West district secretary of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). This action comes in the wake of a tragic stampede that occurred during a political rally led by the party’s president, popular actor Vijay, which resulted in the loss of 38 lives.
Authorities stated that the case has been filed under specific sections of the BNS (Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita) — 109, 110, 125b, and 223. These sections pertain to alleged violations of established norms during the public campaign event held at Velysamupuram.
Officials have clarified that, at present, only Mr. Mathiyazhagan has been formally named in the ongoing investigation. The probe into the devastating incident, which also left 83 individuals with various injuries, is actively continuing.
The ill-fated rally at Velusamypuram commenced at approximately 7:20 p.m. Thousands of eager attendees, many of whom had gathered on the congested roads since early morning, were packed tightly, anticipating a glimpse and speech from Mr. Vijay.
As the massive crowd, predominantly composed of young people, surged forward towards the vehicles to catch sight of the actor-turned-politician, a critical situation arose. Many who had been standing for hours at the designated meeting point were suddenly compelled to move, attempting to create a path for Mr. Vijay’s approaching vehicle. With virtually no space left to maneuver, the scene quickly descended into disorder and widespread confusion, ultimately triggering the fatal stampede.
In response to the tragedy, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced a financial relief package. Families of those who lost their lives in the stampede will receive a solatium of ₹10 lakh each. Additionally, ₹1 lakh will be provided to each injured individual currently undergoing treatment in hospitals. Mr. Stalin further confirmed that the State government has appointed a commission, to be led by retired judge Aruna Jagadeesan, tasked with thoroughly investigating the circumstances and causes that led to this catastrophic event.
