The 14th session of the 15th Kerala Legislative Assembly opened its doors in Thiruvananthapuram on Monday, September 15, 2025, marked by profound reverence. The House came together to offer heartfelt tributes to three remarkable leaders who left us this year: the revered communist veteran and former Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan, Peermade MLA Vazhoor Soman, and the distinguished senior Congress leader and former Minister P.P. Thankachan.
V.S. Achuthanandan, who passed away on July 21 at the grand age of 101, was lauded as an exceptionally inspiring and universally popular figure. His influence stretched far beyond partisan politics, as he fearlessly championed critical public issues, from human rights and environmental protection to women’s empowerment.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan highlighted Achuthanandan’s indelible legacy, stating, “His role in bringing crucial topics such as environmental issues into the forefront of mainstream politics is truly memorable.”
Mr. Vijayan further noted that Achuthanandan’s passing signifies the closing of a significant chapter in Kerala’s socio-political narrative. He was a vital bridge, connecting pivotal moments in the state’s history to the contemporary era, and his unwavering ideology and dedicated efforts will undoubtedly continue to inspire generations to come.
The Leader of the Opposition, V.D. Satheesan, reflected on what he termed the most profound political transformation in Achuthanandan’s career: his widespread acceptance by Kerala’s middle class, a demographic that once perceived him as traditionalist. “His deep-seated convictions and resolute stands on various issues endeared him to a segment that had previously held reservations,” Mr. Satheesan observed.
Remarkably, even during his tenure in power, Achuthanandan maintained an ‘opposition mindset,’ as recalled by the Opposition Leader. This was evident in his forceful stances on critical matters concerning the environment, the welfare of marginalized communities, land rights, and the notorious ‘lottery mafia.’
Speaker A.N. Shamseer honored Achuthanandan as a towering symbol of truth and unwavering resilience. He eloquently stated that “In the revered appellation ‘VS,’ the common people recognized the very embodiment of a revolutionary spirit and an indefatigable fighter.”
Next, the House paid homage to Vazhoor Soman, who served as Peermade’s representative in Idukki district during the current Assembly. He was particularly remembered for his invaluable contributions in bringing the plight of plantation workers to the forefront of the State Legislative Assembly. Mr. Shamseer praised his relentless dedication, calling him a role model for all people’s representatives. His sudden passing in August was mourned as a significant loss for both Kerala politics and the broader Left movement.
The Chief Minister further acknowledged Soman’s pivotal role in galvanizing plantation workers and integrating them into mainstream societal discourse.
Finally, the House extended its tributes to P.P. Thankachan, a respected Congress veteran whose exceptional leadership qualities will be fondly remembered.
Thankachan, who passed away on September 11, left an indelible mark on Kerala politics. His distinguished career included extensive periods as the convener of the United Democratic Front (UDF) and as the MLA for Perumbavoor. He also notably served as the Agriculture Minister in the A.K. Antony Ministry.
Mr. Shamseer added that Thankachan also earned widespread acclaim for his remarkably impartial conduct as Speaker, emphasizing that “In his passing, Kerala has lost a leader of invaluable experience.”
