Tragedy struck the Peerumade sub-jail in Idukki on Friday, as a 35-year-old remand prisoner, identified as Kumar from Kumily, was discovered deceased in what authorities are investigating as a suspected suicide. According to Peerumade Dy.SP Vishal Johnson, Kumar had been held under remand since 2024 in connection with a case filed under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Officials reported he was found hanging inside a bathroom facility within the jail premises.
The incident unfolded on Friday morning when prison authorities released inmates for breakfast. Kumar informed them he would return shortly after retrieving his washed clothes. However, after a significant delay in his return, officials initiated a search, ultimately discovering him hanging inside the bathroom. His body has since been transferred to the Government Medical College Hospital for a comprehensive post-mortem examination.
