On September 15, Jammu and Kashmir’s Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha, inaugurated the first-ever cargo parcel train service connecting the Kashmir Valley directly to Delhi. This new rail link is poised to offer a more affordable and dependable transport solution for the region’s delicate produce, such as fresh fruits, ensuring they reach major markets across the country promptly.
The inaugural train departed from Nowgam railway station and is expected to arrive in Delhi on September 16. Lieutenant Governor Sinha expressed his gratitude for the new service, stating, “I am thankful to the Prime Minister as this cargo service has been launched. Every day, approximately 23 to 24 tonnes of apples and other perishable goods will be transported from here, reaching Delhi by the very next day.”
He further highlighted that this cargo train service is anticipated to significantly boost the local economy by introducing a vital alternative transportation method. “This train will contribute immensely to economic upliftment. We understand that due to challenging topographic conditions and heavy rainfall, the national highway sometimes faces closures, which previously caused considerable losses for fruit growers. The railways have initiated a truly excellent service, and I wish to convey my sincere thanks for it,” he added.
Lieutenant Governor Sinha underscored that while the train service will foster greater connectivity for Jammu and Kashmir, it will also enable goods from the region to reach markets across India at reduced costs.
Concerns had risen following heavy rains last month and earlier this month, which caused extended closures of the national highway linking the Kashmir Valley to the rest of the country. These closures led to worries that this year’s abundant apple harvest might spoil before reaching consumers. This new rail service addresses those critical logistical challenges.
