Kerala is once again shining a spotlight on those who dedicate their lives to the welfare of its senior citizens. This year, the prestigious Vayosevana awards have recognized beloved actor Sheela and celebrated singer P.K. Medini with the coveted Lifetime Contribution accolades.
Minister for Social Justice, R. Bindu, proudly announced the recipients on Thursday. Each Lifetime Contribution awardee will receive a generous purse of ₹1 lakh, a formal citation, and a special memento to commemorate their profound impact.
Adding to the honors, Amaravila Ramakrishnan, a dedicated member of the Kerala State Elderly Commission, was singled out for a special recognition for his exceptional work in advocating for and securing the well-being of the elderly.
The Vayosevana awards span 11 diverse categories, recognizing excellence across various facets of elder care. In a significant win, Kochi Corporation claimed the ₹1 lakh award for the ‘Best City Corporation,’ a testament to its status as the World Health Organization-recognized most elder-friendly city in South Asia.
Kasaragod District Panchayat was celebrated for its unwavering commitment to creating accessible and elder-friendly facilities within public institutions and government offices, earning it the ‘Best District Panchayat’ award.
Nedumangad Municipality received honors for its outstanding doorstep services, particularly for its innovative utilization of the Kudumbashree mechanism to reach and support its senior population.
Further communal recognition went to Mananthavady, named ‘Best Block Panchayat,’ and Olavanna, which secured the title of ‘Best Grama Panchayat.’
Among non-governmental organizations, Khidma Thanal Snehaveedu was lauded with the award for its exemplary services.
The Thrissur Maintenance Tribunal was recognized as the ‘Best Maintenance Tribunal,’ receiving a prize of ₹50,000 for its crucial work.
In the vibrant realm of art, literature, and culture, Kathaprasangam maestro Thrikkulam Krishnankutty and veteran Poothamkali performer Ambalapadikkal Narayanan were celebrated for their contributions.
Sports heroes Iravi Gopalakrishnan and V. Vasu were honored in the sports category, recognizing their achievements and dedication.
These significant Vayosevana awards, established by the Social Justice Department, are dedicated to acknowledging senior citizens, government bodies, non-governmental organizations, and individuals who have shown outstanding commitment to the well-being and enrichment of the elderly across art, sports, and cultural domains.
