Police in Shivamogga have taken a 20-year-old man into custody on suspicion of murdering a 19-year-old girl in Bhadravathi, a case that has deeply saddened the community.
The arrested individual, identified as Surya from Yarehalli, a locality near Bhadravathi, stands accused of ending Mahalakshmi’s life by allegedly pushing her into the Bhadra canal on September 21st.
Following the tragic incident, Surya reportedly attempted to take his own life and is currently receiving medical treatment at a hospital in Shivamogga.
The sequence of events began on September 22nd when Mahalakshmi’s parents filed a missing person report with the Hosamane Police in Bhadravathi. Tragically, her body was recovered from the canal the very next day. Acting on emotional statements provided by her grieving parents, authorities have initiated a case against Surya and his own parents.
Mahalakshmi’s parents have accused Surya of persistent harassment, claiming he relentlessly pressured their daughter, who was a degree college student in Shivamogga, to marry him. They allege that her steadfast refusal ultimately led to her murder.
Confirming these developments, Shivamogga Superintendent of Police G.K. Mithun Kumar announced on Wednesday that the Bhadravathi Police have officially registered a murder case and successfully apprehended the primary suspect.
