Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Thursday, September 25, 2025, that the State government would refer the investigation into the death of renowned singer-composer Zubeen Garg to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) if the current Special Investigation Team (SIT) fails to uncover the full truth behind his demise in Singapore.
Expressing his hope that the SIT would resolve the case within two weeks, the Chief Minister appealed for patience from those demanding justice for Garg. He emphasized that proper legal process takes time, stating, “Instant justice will not stand in court.” He also urged fans to refrain from circulating unverified information on social media.
Chief Minister Sarma also called upon anyone possessing relevant information or evidence related to Zubeen Garg’s death to come forward and contact the Crime Investigation Department.
Key Musician Under Interrogation
In a significant development, the SIT has taken musician Shekhar Jyoti Goswami into custody for questioning. Goswami was reportedly present during the contentious yacht excursion that preceded Garg’s death. Authorities have not yet disclosed the specific allegations against him or indicated if formal charges will be filed.
The SIT’s ongoing efforts also include searching the residence of Shyamkanu Mahanta, who organized the North East India Festival in Singapore, an event where Garg was scheduled to perform. Searches were also conducted at the home of Siddharth Sharma, Garg’s manager.
Furthermore, officials indicated that several members of the Assam Association of Singapore, which arranged the ill-fated trip, might also face detention as part of the deepening investigation.
In a tragic turn of events, a fan of Zubeen Garg, reportedly overcome with grief, jumped into the Brahmaputra River. Rescue teams are currently conducting search operations for the individual.
