The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) recently conducted a major operation, shutting down a polyethylene pipe manufacturing facility in Hyderabad that was illegally applying the coveted BIS Standard Mark. On Wednesday, September 24, BIS officials raided the unit, confiscating an astonishing 2,485 meters of pipes falsely branded with the ISI mark. This substantial haul, estimated to be worth approximately ₹3 lakh, was intended for use in water supply systems. Such unauthorized use of the BIS Standard Mark is a serious offense, directly violating Section 17(3) of the BIS Act, 2016.
BIS officials emphasized that the Standard Mark is not merely a label but a guarantee, issued only after a thorough evaluation of a manufacturer’s production processes and testing capabilities, ensuring products meet stringent safety, quality, and health benchmarks. The bureau strongly advises consumers to exercise caution and actively verify the genuine nature of all BIS-certified goods, especially those vital for daily life such as packaged drinking water, food products, and crucial infrastructure materials like water pipes.
