In a significant development, the Central Government has informed the Delhi High Court that Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor and former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will be provided with “appropriate” residential accommodation within the next ten days. This assurance was given on Thursday, September 25, 2025.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta presented this submission before Justice Sachin Datta, who stated that the Court would officially record this commitment in its order. Justice Datta also emphasized the need for a clear and streamlined procedure in such matters.
The High Court was addressing a petition filed by the Aam Aadmi Party, which sought an official bungalow for its national convenor in the capital city.
During the proceedings, senior advocate Rahul Mehra, representing the AAP, stressed that the Centre must specify the exact category of accommodation to be allocated. He further argued that the new residence should not be a downgrade from previous accommodations Mr. Kejriwal had occupied.
However, the Court clarified that if Mr. Kejriwal finds the allotted residence unsatisfactory, he retains the right to approach the government once more to address his concerns.
This decision follows a series of hearings where the Court had previously voiced apprehension regarding delays and a lack of transparency in the allotment process. On September 16, the Court had criticized the Centre for what it termed a “free system for all” approach, highlighting that the allocation of official residences should not be subject to arbitrary discretion or whims.
It was earlier revealed that a Type VII bungalow at 35, Lodhi Estate—which the AAP had suggested for Mr. Kejriwal—had already been assigned to Union Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary back in July. This specific bungalow had been vacated by BSP chief Mayawati in May of the same year.
The AAP’s petition is grounded in guidelines for government accommodation allotment to political parties. These guidelines stipulate that the president of a recognized national party is entitled to one government residence in Delhi, provided they do not already own a house or have been assigned one in any other official capacity.
